N and N+1
N represents the amount of capacity required to support the designed load under normal conditions. N+1 adds one additional unit beyond that required capacity.
An N+1 design can allow one component to fail or be maintained without reducing capacity below the designed requirement, assuming the rest of the system is configured correctly.
What 2N means
A 2N architecture provides two complete capacity paths, each capable of supporting the designed load. In electrical systems this can mean independent A and B paths feeding dual-powered equipment.
The approach can create stronger fault isolation but requires more infrastructure and careful operating discipline.
Redundancy is more than component count
A design can contain redundant equipment and still have a single point of failure in controls, piping, switchgear, network paths or operating procedures.
