What makes an edge facility
An edge data center is generally smaller and more distributed than a large regional facility. Its purpose is to place compute, storage or network functions closer to a specific population, application or physical operation.
The exact definition varies by use case, but the central idea is consistent: shorten the path between the workload and the user or device.
Latency-sensitive workloads
Interactive applications, industrial control, real-time analytics, gaming, content delivery and some AI inference workloads can be sensitive to network delay.
Moving selected processing closer to demand can reduce round-trip time and limit the amount of data that must travel to a distant central platform.
Edge and cloud work together
Edge infrastructure does not replace centralized cloud or hyperscale computing. Large platforms remain important for training, aggregation, backups and workloads that benefit from enormous shared capacity.
A distributed architecture can use the edge for immediate processing while central regions provide coordination and large-scale computation.
